From Wraggs to Riches

Arnold Wragg an aerospace engineering company who has been manufacturing components for the aerospace sector amongst others for the past decade at its modern facility in Sheffield what purchased as a going concern some 2 and a half years ago by the Holford group based in Bedford.

The company was taken over honouring its obligations to its creditors, staff and customer base ensuring its existing supply chain agreements were kept. Obviously these early stages were the toughest but with a reshuffle of top tier management and its newly found support network the company was in a position where it could see potential.

The task of re-growing the company was given to Mr. Paul Brunton Arnold Wragg’s newly appointed Managing Director who with his strong background in statistical analysis, lean manufacturing and business canvases. Including a Queens Award and Employer of the year for efforts in apprentice programs under his belt took the company back to basics with the help of his team.

The challenge

As the company was in the same building with the same machinery and staff how were we to change the monthly P&L bottom line from a substantial negative to a humble positive in as shorter space of time as possible...?

Knowing ourselves was an imperative part of the rebuild in order to do this the company adopted a Strategy Map; this gave us levels of perspective to focus on from learning and development, internal processes, customer and financial. Once we had these we looked into the elements of each which we believed to be relevant to our company and attached a KPI this giving us a unit of measure for each element of the perspectives.

Once these KPI’s were established and recorded the next stage was to set a target of where it was we needed to be, off the back of this a mission statement and gap analysis was formed. It was from this that mile stone objectives were set along with upper and lower control limits which would flag up any outliers which fell out of these pre set control limits. These outliers along with KPI general performances were then reviewed in quarterly management meetings in compliance with AS9100 regulations.

It was in these meeting that the negatives were extrapolated and placed into a Pareto analysis where the team focused on the higher or more invasive issues aiming for a 50% reduction in an attempt to gain a more significant / relevant improvements.

Through time, investment and understanding of the businesses needs and recourses the monthly P&L reports started to go in the companies favour, customers on time delivery and quality expectations were achieved resulting in an increased order intake and subsequently a more stable cash flow enabling the company to make beneficial day to day decisions.

Arnold Wragg is now a company which is growing, it is proud of its position being a reliable and responsive member of our customers supply chain having a positive foundation on which to build upon for the future.

The company’s next move is to integrate with its newly formed group, the directors of Holford engineering, GT engineering and Barwell spares and services are in the early planning stages of forming a Holford Synergy. The concept being together we can offer our individual specialist skill set, capabilities and be a one stop shop to our customers and convenience to their procurement teams. From turning, milling, fabrication, assembly’s one phone call and we can supply a wide array of products to many certification standards at a reduced cost on time in full. This is a project all involved feel very strongly about and I predict will be a new and exciting venture in the near future.
